A statue of the shoe | Threw at President Bush | Saddam Hussein's hometown

A statue dedicated to the man who threw his shoes at President Bush has been erected in Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown.

Many Iraqis considered it poetic justice when a journalist tossed his shoes at President George W. Bush last month.

Now the bizarre attack has spawned a real life work of art.

A sofa-sized statue of the shoe was unveiled Thursday in Tikrit, the hometown of the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Baghdad-based artist Laith al-Amari described the fiberglass-and-copper work as a tribute to the pride of the Iraqi people.

The statue is inscribed with a poem honoring Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the Iraqi journalist who stunned the world when he whipped off his loafers and hurled them at Bush during a press conference on Dec. 14.

In the Arab world, even showing someone the sole of a shoe is considered a sign of disrespect.

Al-Zeidi was charged with assaulting a foreign leader, but his lawyer is asking prosecutors to reduce the charges. The trial has been delayed.

The shoe attack spawned a flood of Web quips, satire and even street rallies across the Arab world, where Bush is widely reviled for starting the war in Iraq and backing Israel against the Palestinians.

A Turkish shoemaking company also claimed its sales skyrocketed after some reports said it made the shoes that al-Zeidi tossed at Bush.

Children younger than 15 | Not have any alcohol | According to new research

Children under 15 should not drink any alcohol, the Government will advise parents today.

Sir Liam Donaldson, the Government's chief medical officer, said the new advice was based on research which showed the serious damage drink could do to children's health.

And he warned that a 'massive number' of young people drank routinely in the UK.

He said: 'We have a third of a million 11-15 years old on a typical weekend drinking alcohol.

'That's a massive number and we've got to do something about it.'

drink any alcoholSir Liam told GMTV the new advice was aimed at clearing up confusion among parents about the issue.

'The information we got from surveying parents was that actually they are quite confused about the medical and health implications of children drinking alcohol.'

He said research said drink could seriously affect brain development in the young.

'We're trying to get the message across that children aged under 15 are still developing, their brains are developing, and drinking alcohol can do some quite serious damage.

'The Government guidelines also advise that children aged 15 to 17 should not drink without the supervision of a parent or carer.'

Sir Liam said research had shown the importance of the family in fostering healthy attitudes to alcohol in children.

'Families which draw clear boundaries, which establish values, which don't bring children into drink-fuelled environments, are families where children are more likely to grow up not drinking at all, or drinking responsibly,' he said.

The Government said the guidance, which is open to consultation and could be changed, was not about it being a nanny state.

It said it was wanted to 'empower' parents by giving them information to make good decisions concerning their children.

Sir Liam will say the guidance, to be launched by Children's Secretary Ed Balls and Health Secretary Alan Johnson later, draws on extensive medical research as well as evidence on the impact of alcohol on children and young people.

Such advice is the first ever produced for parents in England about the risks of young people drinking alcohol.

The guidance says that parents and their offspring should be aware that drinking, even at 15 or older, can be harmful to health and follows interviews with parents who said they wanted more information on alcohol and young people.

Figures show that by the time they are 15, most young people in the UK have drunk alcohol.

Around one in five 13-year-old says they drink at least every week and that figure doubles among 15-year-olds.

An estimated 630,000 children aged 11 to 17 in the UK drink more than once a week and around one in five 15-year-olds say they first got drunk when they were 13 or younger, according to Government figures.

By the age of 13, just over 20 per cent say they have been drunk at least twice, increasing to almost half of all 15-year-olds. Figures also show that the amount children drink has risen since 1990.

More than one in 10 per cent of boys and 12 per cent of girls aged 15 to 16 have been drunk at least six times in the last month.

Government evidence shows that children who drink are more likely to not use condoms, have sex at a young age, become pregnant and catch sexually transmitted infections.

A lobster believed to be some 140 years

NY eatery frees ancient lobster

lobsterLarge lobsters are usually too big to get caught in traps

A lobster believed to be some 140 years old is to be freed from the confines of a tank at a New York restaurant.

George the giant lobster, weighing 9kg (20lb), will be returned to the ocean, from where he was caught two weeks ago.

The crustacean was bought for $100 (£66) by the City Crab and Seafood and quickly adopted as its mascot, posing for pictures with restaurant patrons.

But animal rights group Peta sought the lobster's release, and will now put it back into the waters off of Maine.

It will enter the ocean in the waters around Kennebunkport, where lobster trapping is banned.

George was originally caught off Newfoundland, Canada, and has spent about 10 days in the tank at City Crab and Seafood.

The approximate age of a lobster can be deduced from its weight.

Restaurant manager Keith Valenti said there was never any intent to harm the lobster, and the decision to keep it in the tank was made to offer customers a little something extra.

"We bought a big lobster, started taking pictures with kids and it worked out real well," Mr Valenti told Reuters news agency.

But it was a "no brainer", he added, to agree to the request to return George to the ocean.

"We never intended him to be sold, just draw attention to the restaurant, and he did."

Ingrid Newkirk, of Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) praised the decision.

"We applaud the folks at City Crab and Seafood for their compassionate decision to allow this noble old-timer to live out his days in freedom and peace.

"We hope that their kind gesture serves as an example that these intriguing animals don't deserve to be confined to tiny tanks or boiled alive."

Bangladesh Pioneering Surfer

Zafar Alam says he has saved dozens of lives in the sea around Cox's Bazaar

BBC News-Cox's BazaarSurfing is normally associated with places like Hawaii, California and Australia's Bondi Beach, but the sport has now even reached as far as the coast of Bangladesh.
Cox's Bazaar, in the country's remote south-west, is better known for its cyclones and vulnerability to rising sea levels, but it also boasts of having, at 125km (78 miles), the world's longest unbroken sandy beach.
According to the man who claims to be Bangladesh's first surfer, Zafar Alam, it also has great surf.
"When I'm riding the waves it feels like I'm on a speedboat and I just love that feeling," he says.
No leash
Before Zafar, the only people who surfed here were the occasional, intrepid foreign tourists. Ten years ago he was able to persuade one of them, an Australian man, to leave him his board.
"He asked for $200, but I was so young I didn't even know what a dollar was, so I gave him 200 taka" (the local currency which is worth considerably less).

BBC News-Cox's BazaarZafar now coaches about 70 young men and women
"In those days I didn't know how to stand up on the board, and it was very difficult because I didn't have a leash," he said. A leash is the string that attaches the board to the surfer's ankle and prevents it from being dragged away by the waves and the tide.
"I then saw people surfing on the television so I knew what to do and the next morning I tried to stand on the board for the first time."
His family was terrified because they had never seen anything like this before. Many fishermen and Bangladeshi tourists drown here every year.
"My mum sometimes cries. She thinks I will die in the ocean. But I tell her it is ok, that I love surfing."
In fact, Zafar used his new skills to save an astonishing number of lives - he says he has dragged 70 drowning people out of the water.
"Most Bangladesh is don't know how to swim and the currents and the waves here can be dangerous. All the time I have to rescue them."

BBC News-Cox's BazaarThe currents and waves at Cox's Bazaar can be dangerous
In 2001, Zafar was spotted by Tom Bauer, a surfer from Honolulu, Hawaii, who runs Surfing the Nations, a charity "that seeks to give communities... a message of love and hope through the sport of surfing and acts of selfless service".
He believes that "surfing can be used as a powerful tool to bring about positive change".
In Bangladesh that has meant enough equipment for Zafar to set up the country's first surf club, and an annual surf tournament. He now coaches about 70 young men and women.
Persuading them to take part is the hardest task, because the region's traditions discourage women from spending time with young men in public.
Cox's Bazaar is one of Bangladesh's most religiously conservative areas as well, so many women here wear the all-encompassing burka. This is not a place for bikinis and tight-fitting wet suits.
In spite of this, Zafar is hopeful that more and more people will take up the sport.
"When I started I was out there in the water all alone. But now I want there to be thousands and thousands of surfers here in Bangladesh."

Family Planning for Goats in Kenya

GoatThe olor is held in place by a rope or an elastic strap

Maasai herdsmen in Kenya have turned to an age-old contraceptive device, the "olor", to protect their precious goat herds from an ongoing drought.

The olor is made from cowhide or a square piece of plastic, and is tied around the belly of the male goat.

It prevents the bucks from mating with the female goats.

The herdsmen are using the device to limit the goat population and ensure there are not too many animals grazing on sparse vegetation.

"We don't want them to breed in this drought," says Mr Ole Ngoshoi Kipameto, a goat owner in Kajiado district.

Vital assets

The area, which is 80km (50 miles) from the capital, Nairobi, has received insufficient rainfall, making the landscape barren and forcing residents to move from place to place in search of pasture and water.

In the Maasai community, livestock are often people's only assets and sole means of survival.

"We tie this hide under the belly of the buck for three months. After that we remove it and then they can breed by November when the short rains come," Mr Kipameto says.

GoatThe olor saves employing separate herdsmen for male and female goats

The rectangular piece of cowhide is passed over the buck's head and front legs and secured under the belly in front of the hind legs with a rope or elastic strap.

"It looks like an apron," Mr Kipameto says.

Peter Ndirangu, the area livestock officer, says the olor is very effective.

"In the modern method, we advocate keeping the bucks separate from the breeding goats. But that is an added cost as you require two herdsmen - one for the bucks and one for the goats," he says.

"This [device] will play the part of a herdsman."

He says the device is very useful in keeping the herd numbers down and controlling when the goats give birth.

"If they give birth during harsh conditions like now, the mothers - the does - are going to be very weak, they're not going to feed their young ones properly," he says.

The device helps the herdsmen to restrict kidding to the period during and after the rains.

If the rains fall in October and November, the dry landscape will turn green again and the herdsmen will be able to settle with their livestock.

Until then, the herdsmen will have to employ the olor to protect their livestock and livelihood safe.

Those who do not use it could face a hefty fine if their bucks are found guilty of impregnating another herder's doe.

Gmail users to drop Internet Explorer 6

Chicago (IL) - Taking a page out of Apple’s book, Google is now urging Gmail users to drop Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) in favor of Firefox or Chrome that, according to the company, run the popular web-based email service "twice as fast." Google also labels IE6 as an unsupported browser, meaning it fails to run some Gmail features.

Internet ExplorerFollowing recent release of Chrome 1.0, Google is increasing the visibility of the browser. In addition to a direct download link on Google.com, YouTube and within the Adsense advertising program, the company is now advising Gmail users who access the service with IE6 to ditch the browser and upgrade to Firefox 3 or Chrome. Google claims the two browsers run the popular webmail service "twice as fast".

Internet ExplorerIE6 users are greeted with a new "Get faster Gmail" message in the menu bar of the web interface. The link leads to a page that promotes Chrome and Firefox 3. "Browsers are getting faster and better at running web applications like Google Mail that use browser technology to its limits," the page reads. "In order to get the best experience possible and make Google Mail run an average of twice as fast, we suggest that you upgrade your browser to one of the fastest Google Mail supported browsers that work on Windows." The page offers direct download links for Firefox 3 and Chrome. IE7 and Apple's Safari are listed as supported Gmail browsers.

Google recently dumped Firefox in the Google Pack application bundle and replaced it with Chrome. Last month, the company added a direct download link for Chrome on Google and YouTube. Google's decision to list IE6 as an unsupported Gmail browser does not affect just consumers: Tens of thousands of small- and mid-sized businesses that run Google Apps hosted services may dump IE6 as well in order to get full Gmail-based features while accessing business email accounts via a web browser.

According to Net Applications, roughly one in five online users accessed the web with IE6 during November. Most of them are believed to be corporate users who rely on IE6 as the certified browser for their business environment. IE6’s market share is notably higher during the week than on weeks, we previously reported. However, there is a trend that shows a slowly, but steadily declining market share of IE6, which suggests that more businesses are switching to newer browsers. What makes Google’s Chrome promotion especially interesting is the fact that Mozilla is picking up two out of three browser users that Microsoft surrenders.

Fast JavaScript engines and greater compatibility with web standards have become Chrome's and Firefox's biggest selling points over IE this year. In the corporate world, these benefits could turn into decisive reasons for companies to ditch IE. Some business software vendors have begun tweaking their web applications for Chrome's speedy V8 engine, resulting in a dramatic speed gains. For example, a Chrome-optimized version of the Recruiting CRM software delivers a 300% performance increase in complex queries.
