The World's First All-glass Undersea Restaurant

The Maldives | 15 April marks the day that the first ever all-glass undersea restaurant in the world opens its doors for business at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. Ithaa* will sit five meters below the waves of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef and encased in clear acrylic offering diners 270-degrees of panoramic underwater views.
"We have used aquarium technology to put diners face-to-face with the stunning underwater environment of the Maldives", says Carsten Schieck, General Manager of Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. "Our guests always comment on being blown away by the colour, clarity, and beauty of the underwater world in the Maldives, so it seemed the perfect idea to build a restaurant where diners can experience fine cuisine and take time to enjoy the views - without ever getting their feet wet."
Created by MJ Murphy Ltd, a design consultancy based in New Zealand, Ithaa's distinctive feature is the use of curved transparent acrylic walls and roof, similar to those used in aquarium attractions. "The fact that the entire restaurant except for the floor is made of clear acrylic makes this unique in the world," continues Schieck, "We are currently planting a coral garden on the reef to add to the spectacular views of the rays, sharks and many colourful fish that live around the area

The Palm Jumeirah Sub-sea Tunnel

Dubai projects continue to amaze the world. Now I'm again amazed by this project, a sub-sea tunnel. The 1.4km sub-sea tunnel project on The Palm Jumeirah is approaching completion with the waters of the Arabian Gulf now entirely submerging the tunnel.

The 38m-wide tunnel connects the tip of the island’s trunk to the crescent and will ultimately provide transport access for those wishing to visit more than 20 five star hotels that will be located on the island’s breakwater. The entire project is expected to be completed in May 2007.

2.7 million yen in cash found floating down a river in Tokyo

2.7 million yen in cash

Police used fishing nets and their hands Wednesday to scoop up 2.7 million yen (US$23,000; €17,230) in mysterious cash floating down a Japanese river, an official said.

A passer-by notified police after seeing the bank notes drifting down the Sakai River on the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa prefecture, a Tokyo police official said on condition of anonymity, citing protocol.

Police managed to catch 270 soggy 10,000-yen (US$85; €64) bills, Japan’s biggest denomination, the official said.

Police are still investigating how and why the money was dumped.

The Geography of a Woman

The Geography of a Woman

Between the ages of 18 - 21 a woman is like Africa or Australia. She is half discovered, half wild and naturally beautiful with bushland around the fertile deltas.
Between the ages of 21 - 30 a woman is like America or Japan. Completely discovered, very well developed and open to trade especially with countries with cash or cars.
Between the ages of 30 - 35, she is like India or Spain. Very hot, relaxed and convinced of its own beauty.
Between the ages of 35 - 40 a woman is like France or Argentina. She may have been half destroyed during the war but can still be a warm and desirable place to visit.
Between the ages of 40 - 50 she is like Yugoslavia or Iraq. She lost the war and is haunted by past mistakes. Massive reconstruction is now necessary.
Between the ages of 50 - 60 she is like Russia or Canada. Very wide, quiet and the borders are practically unpatrolled but the frigid climate keeps people away.
Between the ages of 60 - 70 a woman is like England or Mongolia. With a glorious and all conquering past but alas no future
After 70, they become Albania or Afghanistan. Everyone knows where it is, but no one wants to go there.

 Atushi Ojisama

This satirical musical composition, titled Atushi Ojisama and Ijigen Waltz [wiki], was created by Japanese composer Yamasaki Atushi - Thanks Ron!

The term "Based on a Cro-magnon skinning chant" is a nod to another satirical composition Faerie’s Aire and Dealth Waltz [wiki] by John Stump.

How Big Is Your Control Pad?

Control Pad
I bet its not as big as this giant NES control pad created by Eyes5 measuring 100cm by 43cm. The NES pad is made out of various materials and you have to agree that this looks just like the real thing zapped by a “Honey I Blew Up the Kid” gun. However it does not actually work so this is purely to show off. Check out more information about the NES Control pad here and also other video game inspired art work.

Mafia Tactics in Cowbirds

Mafia Tactics in Cowbirds

Cowbirds have long been known to lay eggs in the nests of other birds, which then raise the cowbirds’ young as their own.

Sneaky, perhaps, but not Scarface.

Now, however, a University of Florida study finds that cowbirds actually ransack and destroy the nests of warblers that don’t buy into the ruse and raise their young.

Jeff Hoover, an avian ecologist at the Florida Museum of Natural History, is the lead author on the first study to document experimental evidence of this peeper payback — retaliation to encourage acceptance of parasitic eggs.

Findings will be published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences March 5.

“It’s the female cowbirds who are running the mafia racket at our study site,” said Hoover, who has a joint appointment with the Illinois Natural History Survey. “Our study shows many of them returned and ransacked the nest when we removed the parasitic egg.”

So-called “brood parasitic birds” lay eggs in the nests of host birds that raise the parasite’s offspring, usually at the expense of some of their own. The brown-headed cowbird parasitizes more than 100 host species, including many Neotropical migratory birds such as warblers, tanagers and vireos. Prothonotary warblers were used for this study because they almost always accept cowbird eggs, Hoover said.

Hosts that use their beaks to grasp or puncture parasitic eggs and remove them from the nest are called “ejecters.” “Accepter” hosts raise parasitic eggs.

“Retaliatory mafia behavior in cowbirds makes hosts’ acceptance of cowbird eggs a better proposition than ejection,” Hoover said. “The accepting warblers in our study produced more of their own offspring, on average, than those where we ejected cowbird eggs.”
